I was brought down to the hospital in handcuffs, and thrown off into the strip cell a number of times. Finally they upped and stuffed me off in that ol’ cast situation. . . . But before they did that, they poured Thorazine down my throat. Held my jaws right there, and just poured it right in my face because I didn’t want to take it. Well . . . after I got in that full body cast, I busted all out of that, man, because I was hysterical. Scared. Somebody’s trying to kill me. . .

A psychologist from an east coast state mental health unit who treated this man before he’d gone into the Land of Enchantment’s prison told reporters he “seriously deteriorated while in the New Mexico state pen. He came back much worse than when he went out there. He returned totally schizophrenic.”" Punishment was the prison’s going treatment for insanity. When a psychotic, mentally disturbed convict was brought before the segregation committee, which included psychologist Marc Orner, the man would be treated like he’d done something wrong, sent to lockup or stripped naked and thrown in the Hole or, worse yet, the dungeon cell near the gas chamber; all his privileges were gone—no canteen, no visiting, no television. Five of the inmates killed in the February 1980 riot were mentally ill. One was Juan Sanchez, who died in the Hole, where he’d been locked up. Two were in the protection unit, Cellblock 4, one in Cellblock 3, and the other was new enough to the prison to still be living in population. They were killed because none of the prisoners understood their insanity any more than the administration did.

“Do you know why it’s so hard to treat mentally disturbed prisoners at the state pen?” a former New Mexico prison psychologist rhetorically asked, and then aptly answered: “Because it’s the institution that has a character disorder.’”
